A person in Iowa became a millionaire last year… but they haven’t claimed the money, yet!
A winning MegaMillions ticket was sold at the Gateway Expresse on University Boulevard in the city of Ames, Iowa. The ticket entitles the ticketholder to a whopping $1 million prize which may NEVER be collected; the ticketholder only has until Sept. 6th to claim the prize, or else it will be recycled into the lottery jackpot.
More than a million dollars each year is lost by lottery winners in similar situations. Also lost is the commission that the salesperson would receive.
Iowa once recycled an unclaimed million by hosting a special lottery event called “Woo Hoo a Million For You Giveaway”, where for three weeks, each purchased Powerball ticket would also be considered for the unclaimed million, until a group of co-workers won on a shared ticket.
