New research suggests that most people who divorce after 50 years old will not remarry in the future.
The statistics vary slightly for men and women, with 62% of men and 77% of women remaining single ten years after their divorce. Even more alarming? The divorce rate for Americans over the age of 50 has doubled since 1990.
Susan L. Brown, co-director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University, says “we were just floored by our findings. Well over a third of people who are getting divorced now are over the age of 50. We just can’t ignore that group anymore.”
“This means more and more people are going to be aging, probably, alone, and outside of marriage, certainly.”
